About Us
The Islamic Center of Petaluma was established in 1989. Its humble beginnings were in a local muslim family’s garage where the local muslims of Petaluma and Sonoma county could congregate on a regular basis.
As the muslim population of Petaluma and Sonoma county grew over the next couple of years they needed more space and rented an apartment in Greenbriar (now Addison Ranch) and used to use the Greenbriar apartment hall for larger congregations on Friday. When the Friday congregations got really large in number, they started renting Hermann Sons Hall for Friday congregation only. In all this time they did not have a resident Imam but relied on local muslims to lead the prayers and congregations. During the holy month of Ramadan, they would invite Hufadh (muslims who have memorized the Holy Quran) from England to lead the Taraweeh prayer (Taraweeh prayer is exclusive to Ramadan where a recitation of the Holy Quran is done during the month).
In the year 2000, an opportunity arose wherein the Calvary Chapel in Petaluma decided to move to Sebastopol and wanted to sell their facility. The Islamic Center of Petaluma purchased this facility with the help of funds raised from the local and extended muslim communities and moved into the present location on Bassett street during Thanksgiving in the year 2000. The Islamic Center is supported entirely by the local and extended muslim communities through donations and has seen a lot of renovation work since the year 2000. This new facility used to have the late Maulana Ashraf Ismail (may Allah have mercy on him) as its resident Imam and currently has Imam Ahmad Ali as its resident Imam.
